“What will you do when you grow up?”
\nThe above phrase that is so familiar to all of us reflects someone\u2019s need from his childhood to make plans for his future. To ‘do’ something he likes, fills him and thanks him. Nowadays teenagers need to make career choices in a difficult working age, where unemployment is plaguing. On the other hand, they choose to be educated in something that do not meet their interests and desires.
\nCareer guidance is now considered very important as it plays a key role in a young person’s career. The choice of profession cannot and should not be a coincidence. The profession takes up a lot of ‘space’ in our lives, so if we don’t like it, it will have a negative impact to usy. In order to choose a profession you need to follow some steps. You need to know yourself, your abilities, your values and your desires. You also need to work with yourself on the basic skills required by the job market. You are constantly challenged to use all your skills, knowledge, and work ability. Social and communication skills are a focal point in controlling your professional and personal life in a rapidly changing environment.
\nWhat are the key skills?
\nThe reason why the phenomenon of unemployment is so great nowadays is that there is a huge gap between the labor market and the skills of young people. According to McKinsey’s international unemployment consultancy, which was conducted in 8 European countries, companies are unable to find the right people to fill the positions they seek, as they have neither a clear job orientation nor skills for this work.
\nYoung people are invited regardless of their professional choice (HEI, TEI, IEK etc.) to have a sufficient degree of the following skills:
\n\u2022 Ability to Communicate: Communicating with others is not always easy. Being a good listener is very important when you need to communicate with others. How do you deal with people who have different opinions, cultures, ideas from you? Can you finish a conversation by remaining friendly and respecting the other? Do you express your feelings or hiding behind other people?
\n\u2022 Problem Solving : when you have a problem are you able to manage it by making a resolution plan or you panic wasting valuable time? Are you able to seek help from someone you know best or are ashamed of and the problem is not resolved?
\n\u2022 Flexibility in changing situations: how do you react when situations change suddenly? Are you able to review, do things from scratch, adapt to change and understand things quickly?
\n\u2022 Negotiation-Conflict and Criticism: In the workplace you will often find yourself criticized by others. Criticism is sometimes constructive and sometimes unfair. Can you manage it? Are you able to understand and accept that others think differently from you? Can you mediate a conflict? Can you calmly defend your point of view without hurting the feelings of others? Are you able to admit your mistakes and learn from them?
\n\u2022 Planning, organizing, and time management: In the workplace you will often be asked to do something in a short amount of time. How many things can you do at the same time? Are you able to separate the most important from the least? Can you coordinate different tasks, arrange and assign tasks? Are you sometimes able to refuse to take on a job?
\n\u2022 Collaboration-team spirit: How easy can you work in a team to accomplish a task? Do you know that you benefit from collaboration? Are you able to hear to others\u2019 opinions, share yours, compromise and take responsibility?<\/p>\n
The above skills are essential in any workplace. Young people of the age base on acquiring academic degrees, which alone are not enough to “give” them a job in the job market.Skills are also called horizontal or transferable because they can be transferred and utilized in any occupation and increase the value of the employee in the labor market regardless of degree. Research has shown that soft skills, as they are called, are often regarded as more important than academic training itself.
\nWhat to do;
\nWhat you need to do is mobilize yourself. Set goals and trust your strengths.With the help of a teacher or guidance counselor you can set career goals that are in line with your interests, qualifications and skills. How you evaluate yourself and your strengths depends entirely on you. You know better if you want to change something, if you need advice or support.
\nParents try not to show your children your own work choices. Motivate your children without considering them an extension of yourself. Allow them to make their own choices, to test their limits and potential. Stand by them and support their choices even if it is not the best in your own eyes. The ultimate goal is to achieve the best possible result for oneself.<\/p>\n
