Most Educational Psychology books focus primarily on the education of children and adolescents. Adult education, however, is a trend that has unexpected dimensions and must be given the necessary attention.
\nThe modern society\u2019s individual needs to cope with the demands of our century , which are often changing, diverse and they interconnected with qualifications, which must be constantly updated. The modern adult needs to be self-aware, able to identify the needs and skills he needs to cultivate in order to cope with the current economic and social conditions. The learning process is about the ability of the individual to act in their adult life, a skill not related to the age of the individual.
\nBowen (1979) mentions for adulthood that “it is the ability to say ‘yes’ without anger and ‘no’ without remorse, it is a place of coexistence and at the same time boundary within relationships.”
\nThe adult does not learn the same way a child learns.
\nAn adult learns empirically when he understands and realizes that something is relevant and applicable to his daily life. She learns energetically, integrated within a group in a climate that encourages participation. Unlike children, the adult comes to learning with a personal suitcase full of life experiences . Sometimes these already acquired information and knowledge need to be transformed in order to apply the new knowledge from the beginning. The adult gains the ability of critical reflection, that is, the ability to analyze things that happen and, and evaluate them.
\n Adulthood is acquired when the individual is treated by others as socially mature, a situation that has prestige and rights but at the same time duties and responsibilities.
\nAdult trainee characteristics:
\n1. They have specific goals
\n2. Have a wide and varied range of experiences
\n3. They tend to actively participate (practice is more fundamental in a learning process than theoretical discussion)
\n4. Have learning disabilities related to their psychological state or to existing knowledge and values
\n5. And finally choose how they will learn<\/p>\n
Learning is divided into three main areas:
\n1.Typical learning is nationally recognized formal education, otherwise general formal education
\n2. Non-formal learning is provided in an organized educational context outside the formal education system and may lead to the acquisition of a recognized certificate. Basically these are seminars, conferences, postgraduate programs, training programs and more.
\n3. Informal learning is all learning activities that take place outside the organized educational context throughout one’s life. It includes all sorts of self-education activities, such as reading a book, using a computer, printed materials, group entertainment activities, and more.<\/p>\n
Nowadays, adult education is becoming more and more organized by the state and it is important for the adult’s attainment and achievement of his or her personal goals.Adults are provided with many opportunities for organized learning through the Lifelong Adult Learning Centers.<\/p>\n
